David, in the forefront of the group photo, was given R200 (about £14) to get started in a small business run from his home, and it is going very well. He is HIV positive, but is not yet able to access any money from the government and does not work. Eileen asks for our continued prayers for her and her family in the UK; that money will be made available in South Africa for those who truly need it for housing, education and health care; and for an end to corruption in all nations.

Luke 19 : 28-40
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem marks the end of his journey. He comes as King, welcomed by his many disciples, but the recognised leaders of Israel refuse to recognise him. The gospel story is reaching its climax, where the King will enter his glory through suffering.

Passionate God, Your Son rode to his destiny, not just into Jerusalem, but all the way to death on the cross because of love for us.
Forgive us when we lack the enthusiasm to follow your parade all the way to its end.
When we ignore, or choose to forget the cost of love.
Forgive us, and remind us that there are many who still suffer in your name.
Through the example of Christ’s commitment and self-giving, inspire and encourage us all to be as passionate for the work of peace and reconciliation as you are. (Angela Shier-Jone

It is a Mission town, Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbekis’ father attended the Methodist High School there. About 14 people are now dying each week in the local hospital from AIDS related diseases. Eileen asks for our continued prayers for her and her family in the UK; that money will be made available in South Africa for those who truly need it for housing, education and health care; and for an end to corruption in all nations.

NEXT SUNDAY EVENING there will not be a service here at Overend. A Circuit United Service ‘Set All Free’ is being held at Mount Pleasant, with a guest preacher, Rev Valerie Ogden, who is the director of the Selly Oak Centre for Mission Studies. This is to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the passing of the Act to Abolish the Slave Trade on 25 March 1807, as a result of a 20 year long campaign led by William Wilberforce and friends.
An evangelical Anglican MP, Wilberforce received encouragement from Quakers and from John Wesley, whose last known letter was to Wilberforce, saying ‘Go in the name of God and in the power of his might, till even American Slavery (the vilest that ever saw the sun) shall vanish away before it.’
Slaves were taken from West Africa and transported to the West Indies in appalling conditions. There they were exchanged for goods that were brought back here. This was justified on the grounds that it was essential for our economy, that black slaves were different and less than fully human, and that they would probably die from famine anyway. A few Christians like Wilberforce challenged this view and worked hard to change attitudes, in the belief that they were serving God.
The story is told in a film on current release, ‘Amazing Grace’. We commend it to you.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY for friends and members living in care homes – Dorothy Billingham, Mary Cartwright, Margaret Bretell and Millie Green. Also pray for Jack & Bessie Deeley, John & Mary Wallin, Karl Lenton, Edna Weston, Doreen Sanger, Sheila Crofts & family, Sheila Best, George Ramsay, Betty Corey and Enid Case who has been admitted to hospital. Remember too those of our members who are caring for friends & family and who are anxious for themselves or others.

Please let JANET have any items you wish included on the News Sheet by 6.00pm on Tuesday evening at the latest.

Luke 24 : 1-12
Women are the first to receive the news that Jesus has been raised.

Almighty God,
through the raising of your Son from the grave,
you broke the power of death
and condemned death itself to die.
As we celebrate this great triumph
may we also make it a model for our living …..
Resurrect in our lives
faith, hope and love
as surely as you raised Jesus Christ from the grave.

breathe on us with your abundant life:
that where we cannot see
we may have the courage to believe

ENID CASE 25.04.1925 – 09.04.2007
Enid played a very large part in our life at Graingers Lane. She and Colin joined the church following their marriage in 1950. Very soon Enid became involved in the musical side of worship and became choir mistress. The choir’s reputation grew and we reached the pinnacle with a performance of Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria’. Enid also led the Young Wives’ singing group. Again we reached a high standard but also had a great deal of fun. Sadly Enid’s health began to decline and by the time we joined with Overend she was very disabled. We have fond and loving memories of Enid and we will miss her.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO PRAY for friends and members living in care homes – Dorothy Billingham, Mary Cartwright, Margaret Bretell and Millie Green. John 21 : 1-14
As the disciples are going about their daily work, the Risen Christ appears to them unexpectedly – feeding, forgiving and commissioning.

While we are doing our routine work,
He comes.
While we are mending our nets or our cars,
He comes.
While the very life we seek is slipping through our fingers,
He comes.
When we toil all night and catch nothing,
He comes.
When we are tired and frustrated,
He comes.
And every time He comes, He calls.
He calls us today and every day.
Challenging God,
you constantly open up new opportunities for us.
Grant us the grace to grasp them
and use them to further your Kingdom
of justice, love and peace. (Peter Curry)

Acts 2 : 1-21
God’s promise of filling people with the Holy Spirit is fulfilled with three amazing signs –
wind, a sign of the life-giving breath of God;
fire, another sign of God’s presence
and the ability to speak other languages, which enabled the disciples to communicate with all peoples.

O God,
who at Pentecost gave to an expectant and united church the gift of the Holy Spirit’
and has wonderfully brought into one fold those who now worship you here;
grant as the help of your Spirit in all our life and worship’
that we may expect great things from you,
and attempt great things for you,
and, being one in you, may show the world that you sent Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, world without end. Amen
(United Church of Canada)

Luke 9: 51-62
Jesus rebukes his disciples for wanting to punish hostile foreigners and urges greater tolerance. This contrasts with the apparent harshness of his words to his disciples when hard choices have to be made.

Loving God,
when we have not shown love to others, but been more concerned with our own wants and comfort;
put a new spirit within us.
When we have lost all sense of joy and peace and become submerged in anxiety and fear;
put a new spirit within us.
When we have not been patient or kind, but found it difficult to cope with the failings of others;
put a new spirit within us.
When we have despaired of being good and have disloyally compromised with the values of the world;
put a new spirit within us.
When we have lacked gentleness and self-control, putting our own feelings before those of others;
put a new spirit within us,
that we may truly become your people. (Peter Sheasby)

Luke 10 : 1-11 and 16-20
Jesus sends out 72 followers, in pairs, with the urgent task of preaching the Kingdom, firstly in small house-based communities and then to cities.

Today we are asked to remember the work of NCH, the Children’s Charity of the Methodist Church. The first children’s home was founded in 1869 by Rev Dr Thomas Bowman Stephenson. It was a radical step for its time, providing a family-based model of care, and rescuing children from the streets and workhouses. The values and principles that motivated Stephenson are still upheld in helping children who are vulnerable and at risk to realise their potential in today’s world. As the work continues, so does the need for voluntary giving, which provides the bedrock of support for the organisation. Chris Homer is our local branch secretary and would be delighted to give you a collecting box to take home or to work, for spare change.

Gracious God, may your love and compassion fill the hearts and lives
of all lonely and frightened children,
and may all who call upon you in their time of need
find in you their refuge and their strength.

Luke 10 : 25 - 37
Jesus shows that religious leaders can learn things from despised foreigners.

The lawyer came to you, Jesus, with important questions.
But instead of theological debate you gave him a simple story,
an unheard-of story at the time, of a Priest, a Levite and a Samaritan.
It was the ‘faithless’ who showed love.
The Samaritan became a neighbour to a man in need.
How offensive, how upsetting, to the lawyer’s safe theology.
You upset us too, Jesus, with your stories.
You give us answers we do not want to hear
and you teach us questions we do not want to ask.
Teach us, not to define our neighbour,
but to be a neighbour, and always show your love and care.

THOSE WHO SIGNED THE PETITION to save Methodist Youth, may care to know the outcome. When the Methodist Conference met, a lot of concern was expressed, reflected in the form of Memorials, the petition and a notice of motion brought by Rev Paul Flowers that staffing levels be maintained. After much negotiation and discussion, it was accepted to have seven full time positions devoted to youth work in the new Connexional team. This still represents a reduction but not as drastic as originally proposed. Thanks to all who signed the petition.

A MESSAGE OF THANKS – Malcolm and I would like to offer our sincere and grateful thanks for our Membership Celebration on Sunday last. It was a wonderful experience. Malcolm would also like to thank those who gave him cards for his birthday – from Margaret & Malcolm Poole.

CONGRATULATIONS to Carolyn Lenton on her retirement this last week. We hope that you will have a long and happy retirement.

Luke 10: 38-42
In the account of Martha and Mary, Jesus defends the right of women not just to offer a ministry of hospitality, but also to be student disciples.

God of intimacy,
you surround us with friends and family
to cherish and to challenge.
May we so give and receive caring
in the details of our lives
that we also remain faithful to your greater demands,
through Jesus Christ. Amen (Janet Morley)

CHURCH REFURBISHMENT – At the church council meeting in June it was decided to re-carpet the church throughout and to replace the pews with chairs. The church floor has been repaired and the carpet has been selected, but owing to a manufacturing delay, it will not be fitted until September. When this is done, the organ will be moved to its new position and the chairs will be ordered and brought in. We regret that the work is taking so long to complete.

Luke 11 : 1-13
The prayer that Jesus gives to his disciples recognises that God provides equally generously for our hunger and for our sinning, as do any good human parents for their children.

Eternal God,
your majesty and power are beyond our minds to understand.
Thank you that you empty yourself of all but love,
that, confronted with our weakness you are gentle,
faced with our failures you are patient,
and in the light of our problems and difficulties
you challenge and strengthen us. (Mark Wakelin)

Luke 12 : 13-21
Jesus teaches the folly of material greed. Satisfaction is not to be found through accumulating possessions. You can’t take them with you.

Every day trillions of dollars are gambled by currency speculators from the rich nations and powerful institutions. This can have devastating effects on the poor of the world. How we, as a church and individuals choose to spend or invest the money in our pockets, really affects others. Ethical investment is an important issue for Christians. When choosing a bank or private pension fund look for those that use their influence to prevent multi-national companies from mistreating local communities and abusing human rights.

A prayer written by a group of Kenyan young people:-

Lord, help us to resist the temptation that money presents.
Help us with financial problems and debts, to avoid dishonest, corrupt ways.
Help us not to be influenced by the materialist standards of other countries.
Help us not to envy those who are better off than ourselves.
Help us to close the gap between rich and poor in our own country.
Guide all managers and directors of large business concerns,
that they may have steadiness of purpose
and do what is lawful and right.
Strengthen our faith and courage to face evil and corruption.

Luke 12 : 32-40
Jesus teaches that the values of Christians are different from those of the world. His disciples must live as if things are not as they are, in the certain hope that one day they will be as God intends.

Let nothing disturb you, nothing alarm you:
while all things fade away, God is unchanging.
Be patient and you will gain everything,
for with God in your heart, nothing is lacking –
God meets your every need. (St Theresa of Avila 1515-1582

Luke 12 : 49-56
This is a rare glimpse into the inner mind of Jesus. He is aware that he is facing people with a conflict of loyalties.

Help us this day, O God,
to run with patience the race that is set before us.
May neither opposition without, nor discouragement within,
divert us from our goal.
Inspire in us both strength of mind and steadfastness of purpose,
that we may meet all fears and difficulties with unswerving courage,
and may fulfil with quiet fidelity the tasks committed to our charge,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. (H Bisseker)
